In March 2024 I traveled through rural Morocco photographing the women of the Anou Cooperative, an artisan owned and managed marketplace. The Anou Cooperative is reforming the Moroccan craft economy and making it possible for Moroccan artisans to build real wealth, real skills and real power. 

Many of the women have been weaving rugs for their entire lives yet were only taking home 4% of the sales, some making as little as $1 a day. Through their work with the Anou, these women are now becoming the breadwinners of their families and in the process redefining gender roles in their communities. 

I had the honor of staying at their homes, cooking and eating meals together, watching and documenting them work, and simply gaining insight and perspective into their incredible skill and unique lifestyle. 

While working with the Anou I also had the opportunity to visit their groundbreaking sustainability initiative, the Atlas Wool Supply in Ait Bougemez, Morocco’s “happy valley”.  On a mission to reimagine Moroccan wool as a source of prosperity for the communities of the Atlas Mountains, The Atlas Wool Supply is putting the finishing touches on a revolutionary solar power mill that will soon be spinning Africa's first carbon-negative yarns. 

The artisans of the Anou will learn to work these state of the art industrial machines on their own marking the first time in Morocco that artisans will lead the industrial process, rather than middleman or foreigners. Now, as the machines are beginning to hum with life a new chapter unfolds—one where tradition meets technology, and women emerge as leaders not just in craftsmanship but in sustainability and industry.
